Canoe Therapy is home to some of the most experienced Occupational Therapists. They want to help your child develop practical life skills, self-regulation and problem solving skills to participate to their full potential in school, self-care, and play.
At Canoe, we know there’s more to playtime than meets the eye. Play is child’s work. Through play, a child learns the key skills of life – to think abstractly, interact with others, solve challenges, move their body, navigate their environment, and regulate their emotions and sensory systems. Sometimes children need additional support from a therapist to ensure their play and learning experiences set them up for success in life. Our Occupational Therapists help children maximize their independence in all aspects of their life, from play to self-care and from education to adult life roles.
When children experience challenges that inhibit their independence in daily life, an Occupational Therapist evaluates the child’s abilities, the task and external factors such as the environment. Working closely with family members and school teams, the Occupational Therapist creates solutions to enable the child to successfully achieve the task or finds a way to work around the challenge while maintaining the child’s maximum independence. Occupational Therapy builds:
Every child is different and has specific challenges. Our Occupational Therapists use sensory integration, perceptional motor training and cognitive-based interventions. They analyze the activity a child wants to achieve and find the least invasive way to enable the child to be successful. What may seem like a simple game is actually our therapists working towards concrete functional and therapeutic goals. We’ll custom design a therapy program that best suits your child’s needs, whether it be one-on-one or in a group setting.
Canoe's team of Occupational Therapists is one of the most qualified in the region. They are experienced, licensed Occupational Therapists, specially trained in pediatrics, including Sensory Integration, Therapeutic Listening and arousal/self regulation challenges. Other areas of expertise include: Astronaut Training, Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP approach), Oral Placement Therapy (OPT), Alert Program, life skills and Handwriting Without Tears.
Our Occupational Therapists are accountable to both their clients and the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. The College is the self-governing body that ensures ethical, competent, and safe practice of Occupational Therapy in Ontario. Following the standards presented by the College, our Occupational Therapists complete annual registration and participate in furthering education, competency assessments and clinical audits to ensure they continue to provide excellent quality of therapy.
