Kathryn completed her undergraduate studies in Kinesiology which she followed with a Master’s Degree of Science in Occupational Therapy at McMaster University.
Over the past eight years, Kathryn has worked as an Occupational Therapist in a variety of settings. Paediatric services have been with families and children to: improve fine motor skills, develop self-regulation skills, engage sensory learning, support development and to complete seating/wheelchair prescription. Kathryn also has extensive experience prescribing home equipment and assisting with home modifications. Kathryn is an ADP (Assistive Device Program) Authorizer for mobility aids; has completed training in the SOS Approach training (Sequential Oral sensory Approach to Feeding), the Get Permission Approach to feeding; and completed training in sensory areas with experienced therapists e.g. Kim Barthel and Ellen Yack. Kathryn has also completed Handwriting Without Tears workshops to support printing skills.
Kathryn aims to make therapy sessions engaging learning experiences tailored to a child’s specific needs by applying innovative and creative methods to engage children. “Tailoring therapy to a child’s specific interests and working at a child’s pace is key to making therapy fun, enjoyable and successful.” Kathryn aims to make all experiences positive learning experiences for families; whether goals be based in areas of fine motor skills, sensory integration or self-regulation needs.
Outside of time at Canoe Therapy, Kathryn works part-time at Lansdowne Children’s Centre in Brantford. While not at work Kathryn is either found outdoors training for a run or enjoying nature with her family and South African Mastiff, Rogue. Kathryn can also be found taking in live music, enjoying new food experiences, practicing yoga poses, creating a project or planning for a new adventure!
