Description: This social skills group is a fun and motivating way to help children develop further awareness of their own thinking and social behaviours and learn strategies to help them develop better self-regulation. It uses cognitive-behavioural strategies to help children monitor and regulate their own behaviours in the moment, read the hidden social rules in each context, and then regulate our physical presence, eyes, language, emotions, reactions, etc. through the development of flexible thinking.
These concepts are taught using a hero named ‘Superflex’ and the ‘Team of Unthinkables’. Superflex demonstrates ‘social smarts’, whereas the Team of Unthinkables illustrate the different ways our brains get sidetracked in a less social way. Children are introduced, for example, to Rock Brain, The Destroyer of Fun, and the Space Invader, and learn more adaptive ways then to follow them.
Part 2 aims at building upon the skills learned in the original Superflex Group we ran in 2014 as parents of participating children saw improvements in social thinking (being more considerate of others, identifying what behaviours they performed which was inappropriate, etc.).
